In Nariño, coffee is everywhere—almost everyone is involved in its cultivation or processing. In the micro-region of Buesaco, however, coffee is more than just a crop it is a way of life. Here, coffee beans can even be found drying along the streets, a testament to its deep cultural and economic significance. Our selection comes from a single farmer, Alvaro Montilla, who owns the highest-altitude farm in Buesaco and grows truly exceptional coffee. We chose this lot for its distinct brown sugar and fruit notes, which stand out among many other batches we’ve sampled. This coffee shines at medium roast, where it reveals a rich and balanced flavor—a true gem. When roasted lightly, just 30 seconds past the first crack, it develops a juicy, vibrant profile, with lemon and lime acidity, hints of raspberry, lemongrass, and honey, and remarkable complexity. However, this roast level, while intriguing, is not the most approachable. If roasted darker, just up to the second crack, the coffee transforms, developing deeper root beer, cherry cola, and caramelized brown sugar notes, offering a richer and more comforting experience.
